Fireside Chat with Laura Deming on the Rooftops of Downtown LA

On Wednesday, Nov. 7, the BCLA team and Nixon Peabody welcomed a diverse audience of investors, academics, and professionals to a Fireside chat with Laura Deming from AGE1. At the beautiful space in Downtown Los Angeles, our guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers with the opportunity to network prior to the arrival of our highly sought-after guest.

After a brief introduction by BCLA’s new president, Evgeny Bondarenko, Laura Deming gave an overview of the concept of longevity and how she became interested in the concept of aging. At the age of 12, Laura started working in Cynthia Kenyon’s lab at UC San Francisco in longevity related research, which then lead to her moving on to study physics at MIT at the age of 14. After receiving the Thiel Fellowship at age 16, she dropped out of MIT to work on her own start-up. In 2018, Laura launched Age1, an accelerator program dedicated to longevity.

This brief summary of Laura’s work and accomplishments was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Sean Kim, Intellectual Property Transactional Attorney at Nixon Peabody. The open discussion allowed the audience to gain insight into the risks and rewards associated with becoming a founder. Furthermore, Laura, and AGE1 Head of Operations, Matt Donne, spoke about how to get involved in AGE1 and what the AGE1 community is looking for, and subsequently answered questions from the audience. Following the great introduction to AGE1, a networking mixer then followed which allowed attendees to chat one on one with both Laura and Matt, which generated huge interest amongst the audience.

The BCLA team would like to thank everyone for attending this very special event!
